Zodiac

I like David Fincher. Fight Club was one of the best movies ever made.

Zodiac is a good movie. It is actually a very good movie. I am not surprise that many critics gave Zodiac a 5-star rating. However, Joon-ho Bong's Memories of murder (2003) told a similar detective stories that happened in Korea during the 60s, exceeded in every department. Of course, the only drawback of Memories of murder was: it's a Korean movie.

It's probably true that Zodiac had a lot to answer to. A dramatized version of the actual events when some the characters were still alive... When the time line of the story spreads through decades; time period changed frequently and the captioned wide-shots killed the flow of the tension. Maybe it was meant to show the audience how it was like to be the characters in the story - time passed without much progress.

It might not be fair to compare Zodiac with Memories of murder, which I always referred as a true masterpiece. But Zodiac was really well done, it did not fell into the typical Hollywood mystery movie formula, nor did it try to be a 'surprise you at the end' movie. Without the depth of 'Memories', Zodiac was also a case study of the lives that were changed by the brutal murders.

Mysteries are almost always left unsolved. The truth is always buried somewhere out there.
